Is Canva Free? Who should use Canva Free?

Canva Free dashboard - when should you use Canva Free?

Let's start with Canva's Free features. On a Canva Free account, what can you access? And who is it for?

Canva Free is ideal for most Canva users if you:

  • are using Canva for personal use and occasional designs.
  • you want to use Canva for social media content or simple graphics.
  • you don't need a lot of storage (you get 5GB of storage on the free plan).
  • you are only using Canva for hobby interests and don't need it for large business operations requiring easily branded content, shared projects and team functionality.
  • are not designing many designs (your design volume is low)
  • don't need advanced tools like background removal, advanced AI features, brand kits or resize tools.
  • you don't need advanced exports or print quality
  • you're comfortable with watermarks or limited assets or not being able to access “all” of the Canva templates and elements.

Saying that, we do know many users around the world who have created successful social media content for their hobby ventures or craft businesses – so don't let limitations deter you from creating social content or even print material for your business. A lot is possible with Canva Free and it is the perfect place to get started with Canva.

What can you do with a Canva Free account?

Yes there are limitations to Canva Free but there's still a lot you can do on a free account, including:

  • So many doc types! You can design with dozens of different document types including social media (from Reels to Carousels), docs (for lead magnets or internal docs) sheets (for organisation, planning, content calendars), presentations, whiteboards, print materials and video formats. Even unusual doc types like stickers, album covers and event programs. And you can get free templates for ALL of these doc types. Check out our Canva Creator account for plenty of free templates.
  • Huge library of elements – while it's not the same as the pro elements, there are still so many too chose from. Unfortunately you can't filter out the pro templates so you will have to scroll through the library to find the free elements, but they are there.
  • Large selection of free fonts – most basic users of Canva find more than enough fonts in the free version.
  • Present from Canva using Canva Presentations – including adding presenter notes and so much more.
  • Automatic Captions – many people do not realise that you can add captions to videos in a free Canva account. You can even do basic animations on your captions.
  • Use a huge selection of filters and effects on your designs to get started.
  • Collaboration Tools – you can collaborate with others by adding comments to designs which makes work so much easier (and less emails).

That's not bad for a totally free tool! And we haven't even scratched the surface of what's possible. So I recommend you get started with a free account and explore the features in Canva. It's the best way to discover what you can do with it.
