Watch Your Language! How to Tailor Your Language to Engage Fans & Build Community.

Social Media is all about the language that we use, so watch your language! Our language on Facebook should live and breathe the concepts of connection, community and relationships.  As someone who has worked for many years in communication, language & linguistics, this really hits home.

Tips for Watching Your Language when using Social Media (by Socially Sorted, Sunshine Coast Social Media)

Oops, did I just say that out loud? Watch your Language!

Here are some tips re things to consider when choosing the language we use with our audience (ie our raving, referring fans!).

CHOOSE YOUR LANGUAGE WISELY:

  • Terms like “join our community” are much more inclusive and welcoming than “find us on facebook”.
  • Use “you” and “your” a lot and ask your fans about themselves – ask lots of questions!
  • Our fans/likers/followers want to show up and participate and they want to have a voice”¦so ask for their opinion, let them sit on their soapbox, request their advice and most of all, give them as many opportunities as possible to have their say!
  • Use language that builds a community”¦words like “we”, “our”, “community”, “share”, “connect” and “us” create a sense of belonging and importance”¦and most of all encourage fans to connect with each other  – the true sign of a community on facebook is when fans start answering questions asked by other fans and/or they interact with each other.
  • Use “first-date” language – you are more likely to get a call-back if you show great interest in the other person by listening to them and asking them questions about themselves.  Do the same with your fans and they will be more likely to click on your posts and return to your wall.  Fans love to feel important!
  • Really hone in on who your ideal fan/follower/client/raving referring brand advocate is!  Where do they live?  What type of work do they do?  How old are they? What are their interests?  Are they male or female? What keeps them up at night? (ie what are their problems you can solve)”¦then when you have a picture of your ideal client, start to think about the type of language you can use that will reach out to them.  What will allow you to connect to them?  When you can tailor your language to your target audience, you will be much more successful in engaging with them.

So, in a nutshell, have a perpetual first date with your fans, and don't forget to watch your language!
